Intern Resource GuideDownload this Resource Guide print format (pdf) Welcome to the world of internships, apprenticeships and mentorships. This resource is both for individuals wanting experience or new skills and for businesses wanting to train and educate new workers. Defining Our TermsMentorships are focused on teaching an individual about an industry or profession. There’s little emphasis on gaining professional experience. Apprenticeships, often for little or no pay, focus on training in a specific trade or craft. Internships are the broadest category and are generally positions (full or part time) for less than a regular salary. The intern gains experience, knowledge, and exposure to a profession or industry. Businesses can develop workers into full-time employees or simply help build their industry. Students who have internships are more likely to get jobs in the same community through their contacts and experience. Internships (which will be used as an all encompassing term) can provide critical support for Santa Fe’s economy. Many businesses report difficulty finding workers and many young people have trouble finding stimulating jobs or careers. Internships are a tool to bridge the gap and address both problems. Internships give people a chance to jump-start a career. They often open up positions that individuals couldn’t get as a regular job. These special opportunities can lead to professional contacts and future job offers or provide the chance to discover if a career is the right one. Overview of Internships in Santa FeMany businesses interviewed want to host interns. Many of them don’t do so because they don’t know how, can’t pay, or are too busy to look into it. The most successful internships here are often informal and begin when a personal connection brings a business and an individual together.
