Take a deep dive with CrSF Executive Director Sorakamol Prapasiri and CrSF Creative Fellow Patrick Schaefer through a St. John’s College-style seminar series on Democracy in America by Alexis De Tocqueville. Let’s examine the ambitious project of democracy through a reflection on America’s political and social landscape of the early 1800s. Through this experience, Sorakamol and Patrick will be sharing the art of conversation they have learned from their alma mater St. John’s College. Relish rigorous and joyful conversations with others. Practice how to ask furthering questions, listen deeply, and synthesize ideas. Join us and experience the truest meaning of “conversation”—the journey of turning together.

For the most fruitful experience, we recommend reading the assigned text twice prior to each seminar session. No additional background reading is needed. Discussion will cover only the text assigned and prior text read.

Meet Facilitators

Bio

Patrick Schaefer practices law in Santa Fe, focusing on regional structures of governance. In particular, his practice works to bridge jurisdictional divisions between state, tribal, federal, and Mexican entities. He currently serves as Chief General Council for the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration (NM DFA).

Prior to his current role with NM DFA, he was the founding Executive Director of the Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness, a pioneering and innovative research platform located at the University of Texas at El Paso that produces detailed economic and legal analysis of the various market, regulatory, and law enforcement mechanisms that converge in New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Texas. Patrick began his legal career in international development finance at the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C.

He received his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law and his LL.M. from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He has also studied at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, the Universidade de São Paulo, the Université Paris 1: Panthéon-Sorbonne, The Hague Academy for International Law, the Katholieke Universitiet Leuven, graduating magna cum laude, and St. John’s College, where he received his undergraduate degree.

Bio

Sorakamol believes we can simultaneously design for better outcomes, higher ROI, stronger communities, and happier humans. Fascinated by neuroscience and behavioral economics, you’ll find her always out on the frontier, prospecting for the incentives that shape human actions.

Sorakamol is a graduate of The Seattle Art Institute’s Graphic Design Department and the St. John’s College Great Books Program. She attributes her ability to instill beauty in every project she leads to her ability to distill complex ideas into their core essences. Prior to her stepping into leadership at Creative Santa Fe (CrSF), she has applied her craft and critical thinking skills to her own brand design practice, Six Blooms, and to multiple community projects she organized—all geared toward  strengthening the social fabric, exciting financial investments, and aligning diverse needs. Under her leadership, CrSF has expanded its capabilities to include strategic design support to other organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies who are committed to building vibrant, inclusive, and adaptive communities in Santa Fe and throughout New Mexico.
