ABOUT THE 2030 SUMMIT
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, in partnership with the Santa Fe, New Mexico-based technology company Descartes Labs, will host a one-day summit to chart a path forward for New Mexico to reach the state’s climate change goal of a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The 2030 Summit will bring together industry leaders including Tesla, EOG Resources, Pioneer Natural Resources, Pattern Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratories, and others to explore cutting-edge innovations and technologies to create a pathway for New Mexico’s environmental and energy future.
New Mexico, perhaps more than any other state, is deeply reliant on oil and gas as a primary source of funding for education, road construction, and infrastructure improvements. New Mexico economists are forecasting that the state will have $1.3 billion in revenue in excess of current spending levels available in the coming budget year. That number is expected to grow due to recent advancements in fracking technology in the Permian Basin — a lead producer of oil and gas in the nation.
The Governor has emphasized the critical need to diversify New Mexico’s economy in order to reduce poverty and avoid the perils of a boom-and-bust cycle and the summit’s focus will be on developing a unified, strategic, and technologically innovative strategy to reach the state’s 2030 climate goals. Additionally, this summit seeks to firmly establish New Mexico as a national leader in bridging traditional divides by convening leaders in oil, gas, environment, and transformative technologies to determine sustainable and economically responsible policies.
