Matt brings over 30 years of experience and leadership to the HHL Architects team. He became a New York State registered architect in 1990. Eight years prior, he received an AAS in Architectural Technology from Erie Community College (ECC), followed by a BPS in Architecture from the University at Buffalo, School of Architecture and Planning in 1988.

He joined HHL in 1989 and became an owner of the firm in 1997. He continues to be a managing partner responsible for staff and business development, while leading project design and management. He has extensive experience managing complex, multi-million dollar projects which require clear channels of communication among numerous specialized consulting firms. His highlights include partnering with Ted Lownie, since 1992, leading the restoration and reconstruction of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex; the award-winning adaptive reuse of New York City’s historic PS109 into El Barrio’s Artspace, an artist’s live/work affordable residential project; the multiple office headquarters designs for Delaware North Companies; interior and exterior renovations at the 38-story Seneca One Tower in Buffalo, including the Canadian Consulate General of Buffalo; and the M&T Bank Design Guidelines program (in conjunction with Pentagram Architects) along with branch and corporate design projects.

Matt has a notable track-record of civic involvement in the Western New York community; serving on boards such as the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York State, and Downtown (Buffalo) Neighborhood Development, among others. In 1998, Matt was recognized by Business First, a local business newspaper, in their annual 40 Under 40 awards, and in 2001 he was recognized by ECC with their Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2002, Matt received an award from the Partners for a Livable Western New York for his work on the Buffalo Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team project addressing Living in Downtown Buffalo; and in 2003 he received the Professional Excellence Award for service to the profession by the local AIA chapter.
