Omar Hakeem, AIA, LEED AP is Design Director at buildingcommunityWORKSHOP. Omar’s passion for design has taken him from the cloud forests of Costa Rica to the ravaged communities of the Gulf Coast and many places in between. Through these opportunities, Omar has studied and practiced how design can act as a catalyst for supporting resilient, sustainable communities.

Having led many efforts during his tenure at [bc], Omar currently leads design efforts across all of [bc]’s offices. His work focuses on geographical, social-cultural frontiers as well as regions dealing with systemic poverty, health, and resilience issues. Through these efforts, he has completed award-winning affordable housing projects, rapid response disaster housing prototypes, urban bike and pedestrian infrastructure, regional drainage improvements, community-based rural planning initiatives, and numerous single-family homes.

Originally from Washington, D.C., he received his B.S. of Architecture from SUNY Buffalo as well as a Master of Architecture and a Masters of Science in Sustainability Design from the University of Minnesota in 2009.
